Flashback Spotlight
These people came into our homes through the airwaves and impacted our lives in ways we don't even realize.  They delivered the music we loved and sparked the conversations of the day, while filling us in on the latest events and news.  They were the personality jocks on our local radio stations and the artists whose records they played.

Steve Percell
In 1979, Steve Percell (Percell Artis, Jr.) was the first African American to broadcast on WFOS.

Born in Norfolk and raised in Chesapeake, he graduated Great Bridge High School in 1980.

Percell decided to pursue a career on radio, sending auditioning tapes to WRAP and WOWI.

When he received no replies from them, he decided to audition in person.  But a nervous young man didn't pass the audition.

A friend of Percell's, Mike Lowerey, who worked at WFOS (later for WTAR), encouraged him not to give up, and took him on a tour of WNOR, where Lowery worked part-time. While touring the station, circumstances and opportunity arose.  WNOR's own, Frenchie B, offered Percell a job on the spot, working weekends, noon to 6-pm.  Percell worked there for four years.

In August of 1980, Percell attended Norfolk State, and was on the air at the station there,
WNSB-FM Jazz 91, weekdays from 4pm-7pm.

So for over four years, Percell was on Hampton Roads radio airwaves, 7 days a week.
